Working out at home - Weight training equipment needed for home workouts
Obviously before you start working out at home you are going to need some sort of weight training equipment. I personally feel more comfortable working out at home rather than having to go out to the gym each day so over the years I have invested in some basic weight training and gym equipment. Nothing too expensive or fancy mind you but If you’re looking to Workout At Home rather than going to the gym here are a few items you are going to need:
- A Barbell bar
- A set of free-hand weights
- Additional weight plates (0.5klbs, 1.1lbs,2.2lbs,5lbs,10lbs)
- A Workout Bench
- Weight lifting gloves (optional)
- Stopwatch
The barbell bar will be used for the main core exercises such as the Bench Press, Bicep Curl and the Shoulder Press. This allows us to add additional weight to the bar once you are happy you can grind out 8-12 reps of a certain weight.
Next up we are going to need a Set Of Dumbbells And Some Additional Weight Plates. These types of weight training equipment are essential if you are looking to workout at home. The weight plates will come in useful once you get fitter and stronger as they allow you to add extra weight to your lifts. Dumbbell sets usually come in two different forms. Some sets are sold in specific weights whereas other sets allow the user to adjust the weight of the dumbbell via the use of weight plates.
I would recommend purchasing the adjustable dumbells as these will last a lot longer than a traditional dumbbell set. I say this because once you become stronger, lifting the same weights is not going to build additional muscle as your body has adapted to lifting this kind of weight. When purchasing weight plates it is a good idea to buy a variety of weights. Plates weighing 0.5lbs, 1.1lbs, 2.2lbs, 5lbs and 10lbs would be an ideal choice.
A Workout Bench will also be required if you plan on working out your Chest (which you should be). Once purchased, you can then place the barbell on the bench allowing you to perform a variety of exercises such as the bench press and incline bench press. A number of other exercises can be performed on a bench making it a very useful piece of gym equipment. Depending on the model bought, certain benches will also come with a built in Leg Press extension.
Weight lifting gloves are a useful addition to any routine but are by no means essential. If you want to harden your hands up and improve your grip then i wouldnt suggest using gloves. Weight lifting gloves can help protect the hands and fingers when lifting heavy weights but on some lifts you may feel better without the gloves as you can feel the bar and grip it easier. The choice is totally yours. Weight lifting gloves are rather cheap and can be purchased for around £5-£10.
A stopwatch will also be needed to time your rest periods. Remember if you don’t have a proper stopwatch you can also use a mobile phone as most come equipped with a stopwatch nowadays.
As you progress with your routine, you will be lifting heavier weights and may find it useful to invest in a weight lifting belt. I personally have not got one but if you feel it will come in handy during your workout or maybe you have a weak back, by all means purchase one.
You may also find it useful to invest in additional weight training equipment as you progress and get even stronger such as more weight plates. Ensure you have enough room in your home to carry out your routine safely. If you don’t you may find it easier and safer to go to a local gym instead.
