Weight Loss Diets - What is a diet?

The diet is a crucial part of any fitness regime. Whether you’re looking to lose weight, maintain it or even possibly gain weight, your diet is the first component you should be looking at. People nowadays seem to be intimidated as soon as they hear the word diet. The word diet does not necessary relate to losing weight, not eating or how ever other way you may think of it. So what is a diet? A diet simply refers to the kind/types of foods a person eats on a regular basis.

For example, if a person only ate chocolate each and every day on a regular basis, this person can actually say ‘I am on a diet’. Although they are on a chocolate diet, it simply does not matter. A diet is a diet and does not necessarily mean depriving your body of food to lose weight. Hopefully that answers the question of what a diet really is and will help you understand that the selection of foods you choose to eat actually makes up the diet you are on. That brings me to my next point. Depriving your body of food in a bid to lose excess pounds is not the best way to go about a diet. Now, when I say depriving your body of food, I mean by starving yourself or taking in a very small number of calories throughout the day.

Please do not do this. Not only will this make you feel lousy, drained and low on energy, but can lead to serious health problems. If you’re new to diets and have recently made a decision to finally lose a few pounds, congratulations! Making the decision to go on a diet is the first step and sometimes the most difficult. Of course there are many more but we can now get started and concentrate on making progress. Before you start a diet there are a few things you need to know/do before you begin your diet.

Firstly, you will need to weigh yourself. Preferably this should be done first thing in the morning upon rising as this is when your body would have digested most of last night’s food and should not be carrying any excess water weight. Once you have weighed yourself write down your weight on a piece of paper or in a notepad and store it safely for future reference. This way you can check your progress each week by comparing the figures on the scale to last weeks. You will also need to figure out how much food you plan on consuming during each day whilst planning out your meals to help keep hunger and cravings at bay. Calories will play a big part in your diet and will be the difference between gaining weight and losing weight.
